Rooms
A room keeps the colour of the best hour it has held.
I have painted this same wall four times.
Selected works & fragments
Some things are only visible in low light.
A small light used to wait at the edge of the room.
Rija Adeel makes work the way most people remember things — slowly, and slightly out of order.
Colour arrives before meaning does. A shade is chosen because it is true, not because it is understood, and the explanation follows later, if it is needed at all.
Much of the work stays open on purpose, and is better for it. Not everything needs resolving; a held breath is still a kind of sound.
Observation first. Silence, then colour. Meaning arrives when it is ready.
A small light used to arrive first. The work arrives first now.
Untitled unless stated. Undated by choice.
Every studio has a source. For a long time it arrives from somewhere else — a window, a lamp, a visitor who happens to be bright.
Then one evening the work is lit from the inside, and the room stays warm long after the visitor has gone.
Both kinds of light are real. One of them simply learned how to stay.
Nothing is taken from a light by learning to make your own.
A light that stays beside the work long enough will, one day, find the work glowing on its own.
That is the whole of its purpose. Not to remain. To be no longer required.
What follows is not an ending. It is a room that has learned, and a light that is free to go where it has not yet been.
Nothing kind is wasted by being outgrown.
Lines from the edges of sketchbooks. None of them were written to be read.

Warmth is not a measurement. It is a colour that stays.
Some of it never cooled.
The light arrives late that month and then stays, generously, like a sentence in no hurry to end.
Nothing made in June wants to be rushed.
Amber is the colour light chooses when it decides to stay.
Some things are kept simply because they are good.
The doorway remembers who stood in it first.
The room is its own now.
It never asked to be kept. It only asked to be enough.
It was.
There was once a firefly that knew the way through every dark room.
It taught the shadows how to become softer.
One evening I noticed the room was bright even after it had gone.
The firefly seemed smaller after that.
Perhaps some lights exist only until another light learns how to stay.

It arrives without being called. It keeps its own hours. It waits, sometimes, for no reason at all. It has never needed to be followed. It is going somewhere of its own.
Move slowly. It notices.
